"He was too darn good for us today," grumbled the Lynchburg manager after his club suffered a 11-0 shutout at the hands of Jason Marquis of the Visalia Oaks. He held the Lynchburg Hillcats scoreless in a 6-hit whitewash.
Marquis was in a zone of his own most of the game and finished with 13 strikeouts and no walks in a strong outing.
In a postgame quote his own skipper added, "He pitched his butt off, had good velocity, good movement and had those guys off balance. Jason did a whale of a pitching job."
Up to now Marquis has compiled an ERA of 2.37 with a 11-2 mark over 15 starts. He has 134 strikeouts in 121.2 innings and has held opponents to a .210 batting average. |
 | Friday, July 3rd, 2009: Aragón Slaps 5 Hits
Félix Aragón was a tough out and went 5 for 5 against Corpus Christi in a fine hitting display. But the Hooks still managed to beat the Wilmington Blue Rocks 11-4.
"I got my pitches and I connected. They all found the right holes on the diamond. Some days you hit shots and they're right at somebody...and some days they fall in." Aragón also added, "And some days you lose, no matter how well you play. 5 hits in a game ought to win it."
Don't know if it is any consolation to him, but he will get his name put in the record books.
F. Aragón doubled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 5th, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI triple in the 8th.
This season Aragón has delivered 12 hits in 35 at-bats for a .343 average with 1 home run. He is getting on base at a .439 clip and his totals also include 6 RBIs and 3 runs scored. This year Aragón has played in 14 games. |
| Wednesday, July 1st, 2009: Oaks Starter Wins JL Pitching Award
The hottest hurler in the Johnson League last month was Paul Smiley of the Visalia Oaks. He caught the attention of everybody in the league with some eye-catching stats, good enough to win the JL Pitcher of the Month.
In June, Smiley starred with an impressive 6-0 record. In 6 starts he gave up 37 base hits and struck out 55 in 45.1 innings with a 2.78 ERA.
This year Smiley has a 15-0 record with a 2.92 ERA. |
